vaser liposuction for the hips

We all have problem areas where we naturally find it harder to lose weight, and for a lot of women, in particular, weight tends to settle on the hips. Whether this leads to a pear-shaped figure or just a slight ‘muffin top’ appearance, excess weight on the hips is a common complaint about women.

This is often due to genetics, and many people will find that the way they gain weight is hereditary. But it also becomes more difficult to lose weight as we age – our metabolism naturally slows over the years, and stubborn deposits of fat become harder to shift. Quite often the onset of menopause also causes a change in metabolism and it is harder to lose weight.

Traditionally, patients have opted for vaser liposuction in order to help reduce the stubborn fat on their hips. Traditional liposuction can provide good results but recent advances in fat removal technology such as vaser liposuction has refined the procedure with the result that the fat removal can be carried out in a more controlled and less invasive manner. This has resulted in faster recovery times with less pain and discomfort. There is also a lower incidence of some of the risks of the procedure which can include irregularities or uneven skin.

In recent years, liposuction has become a more refined procedure which is an effective and efficient treatment. One of the latest advances is vaser, which stands for Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance. This is a minimally invasive procedure which works by liquefying fat gently before it is removed from the body.

During vaser liposuction the hips, the fat is liquefied through gentle ultrasound technology before it is extracted from the body. Because it is a less invasive treatment, the tissue, cells and nerves remain relatively undisturbed by the treatment (which is what renders the treatment superior to traditional liposuction).  This means that only the fat is removed but the surrounding tissue is left undisturbed.

Why is it difficult to lose weight from the hips?
The hips are an area of the body that may generally carry a higher volume of fat. The reason for this is that it is a storage area for excess weight and despite exercise and attempting to lose weight it can be particularly difficult to lose weight in this area.  There may also be a genetic tendency to accumulate fat in this area even in women who are otherwise slim and within their ideal weight range. Liposuction is therefore ideal in this situation since removing the fat actually removes the storage cells for the fat resulting in a permanent result if further weight gain is avoided.

How is Vaser liposuction performed on the hips?
VASER liposuction will be performed either under ‘twilight’ local anaesthetic (sedation) or general anaesthetic depending on the amount of fat that needs to be removed. Mr. Chana will be able to discuss which of these will be more appropriate for your case during your consultation prior to treatment. The treatment might take anywhere between one and two hours – again, this depends on your individual case, and how much fat you are having removed. The surgery is a day case procedure and you should be able to go home the same day after surgery.

What are the typical results?
The patient below was treated by Mr Chana and was in her mid-twenties, exercising regularly but unable to modify the shape of her outer hips and thighs through diet and exercise. She underwent VASER liposuction to the outer thighs and hips but also to her inner thighs. Carrying out VASER liposuction to both areas can visually narrow the appearance of the upper thigh.

What is the recovery after vaser liposuction on the hips?
In terms of recovery, you are advised to take a few days off to recuperate. You should wait a few weeks before you return to any strenuous activity like the gym, and you will need to wear a compression garment as supplied by the hospital for a period of 6 weeks.  You will see your best results from vaser between 3 and 6 months postoperatively.

One of the major advantages of vaser liposuction for the hips over traditional methods is the reduced need for touch up or revisional procedures. Although there is always the risk that you will need further refinements when removing large amounts of fat from areas like the hips, vase reduces the likelihood of this by up to 50%.

Book a consultation with Mr Chana
Mr. Chana was one of the first BAAPS accredited surgeons in the country to offer vaser liposuction back in 2009, and has had a huge experience in the use of this technique. He is known in the industry for placing emphasis on natural-looking results that are individually tailored to enhance the existing features and body type and finds that vaser helps to elicit this standard.
If you are interested in having vaser liposuction to reduce the size of your hips and improve your figure, booking a consultation with Mr. Chana will be helpful on a number of levels. Not only will it help you to understand the results you can expect from your surgery, but it will allow you to get to know Mr. Chana before he performs your surgery; many patients find this greatly helpful in allowing them to relax and feel comfortable going forward with their procedure. You will also be able to voice any concerns you might have, and have any questions answered so you feel you have a comprehensive knowledge of the treatment and how it will affect you.
