Understanding the Deep Plane Facelift

A deep plane facelift is a sophisticated surgical technique that targets not just the skin but also the deeper structural layers of the face, known as the SMAS (Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System). By a full release of the ligaments deep to the SMAS (deep plane) and repositioning these deeper tissues, the procedure effectively lifts and tightens the midface, cheeks, jawline, and neck, creating a more youthful and natural appearance.
Unlike traditional facelifts, which focus primarily on tightening the skin with minimal work on the SMAS layer, the deep plane facelift ensures that tension is more freely distributed across the face with the tissues elevated in a very natural and effective manner. This approach minimises the risk of an over-tightened or artificial look, making it a preferred choice for those seeking a natural but profound rejuvenation.

How long do the results last?

The results of a deep plane facelift are widely regarded as among the most long-lasting in facial plastic surgery. On average, patients can expect their results to last for approximately 10 years, with some enjoying benefits beyond this timeframe. This longevity is attributed to the comprehensive nature of the procedure, which addresses the root causes of facial aging rather than merely masking them.

Although, further ageing occurs with a deep plane facelift it is important to understand that in 10 years time you will still look better than if you did not have a facelift had you allowed ageing to progress naturally. This is because facelift surgery sets back the clock and further ageing in the face is slowed. This is a concept called prejuvenation. This is the reason that many celebrities who have had surgery look youthful in their 50s and 60s, because they have already had a facelift at a younger age.

However, it is essential to understand that no surgical procedure can stop the aging process altogether. Over time, gravity, genetics, and environmental factors will continue to influence facial appearance. While the treated areas will age more gracefully compared to untreated areas, some degree of change is inevitable.

Factors that influence longevity

Several variables can impact how long the results of a deep plane facelift last. These include:

  1. Surgical Expertise - The skill and experience of the surgeon play a pivotal role in determining the longevity of the results. An accredited and board certified plastic surgeon with a deep understanding of facial anatomy will be better equipped to achieve durable, natural outcomes. Surgeons who specialise in facial surgery tend to deliver better results that withstand the test of time. In the United Kingdom Board Certification can be determined by the qualifications FRCS(Plast) after a surgeons name.
  2. Age at the time of surgery - Younger patients, typically in their 40s or early 50s, may experience longer-lasting results due to better skin elasticity and overall tissue health. Older patients can still achieve excellent results, but the natural aging process may progress more rapidly. This is why it can be beneficial to undergo surgery in the 4th or 5th decade since often the results and longevity are likely to be better.
  3. Skin quality - Factors such as skin elasticity, thickness, and collagen levels significantly influence the outcome. Healthier skin tends to maintain its structure and resilience longer. Thin skin, previous excessive sun damage and extreme weight loss can result in [poor skin quality which can affect the overall outcome and longevity.
  4. Lifestyle choices - Smoking, excessive sun exposure, and poor nutrition can accelerate aging and compromise the longevity of surgical results. Conversely, a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet and regular skincare routine, can prolong the benefits of a facelift.
  5. Genetics - Genetic predispositions play a role in how quickly a person ages. Some individuals may naturally experience slower aging, which can extend the lifespan of their facelift results.
  6. Post-operative care - Following the surgeon’s post-operative care instructions is critical. This includes avoiding strenuous activities, protecting the skin from the sun, and adhering to a skincare regimen.

Maximising the longevity of a Deep Plane Facelift

While the inital results of a deep plane facelift are impressive, there are steps patients can take to ensure their results last as long as p9ossible:

  1. Commit to sun protection - UV radiation is a primary contributor to premature aging. Regular use of a factor 50 broad-spectrum sunscreen, along with protective clothing and hats, can safeguard the skin and is one of the most important factors in prevention of skin ageing.
  2. Adopt a healthy lifestyle - A diet rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals supports skin health and collagen production. Staying hydrated and avoiding smoking also play a crucial role.
  3. Maintain a skincare routine - Incorporate products with proven anti-aging ingredients, such as retinoids, hyaluronic acid, and peptides. Regular visits to a Plastic Surgeon for treatments like chemical peels or laser therapy can also enhance skin quality.
  4. Consider regenerative medicine techniques for the skin - New therapies such as polynucleotides and exosomes for the skin are designed to help with regeneration of the skin . Even better is using your own stem cells which can be isolated from your fat and injected or microneedled into the skin. Such treatment can be provided at the same time as fat transfer during the facelift. For more information on this latest and advanced technique visit https://www.jagchana.co.uk/face-and-neck/stem-cell-facelift-surgery
  5. Consider non-surgical maintenance - Non-invasive procedures such as Botox , chemical peels or laser treatments.Skin boosters such as Profhilo can complement the results of a deep plane facelift, addressing minor concerns as they arise.

Comparing the Deep Plane Facelift to other techniques

To understand why the deep plane facelift offers such lasting results, it's helpful to compare it to other facelift techniques:

  1. Traditional (SMAS) Facelift - While effective, the traditional facelift primarily tightens the skin and may not address deeper tissues as comprehensively as the deep plane facelift. As a result, its results may not last as long.
  2. Mini Facelift - This less invasive option targets mild to moderate aging and has a shorter recovery time. However, the results are typically less dramatic and may last only 5 to 7 years or less..
  3. Thread Lift - A non-surgical alternative, thread lifts offer temporary results, usually lasting 1 to 3 years. They are better suited for younger patients with minimal sagging. Thread lifts relying elevating the skin to suspend the deeper tissues. This is not an anatomical restoration of the youthful anatomy and the threads give way very easily.

The deep plane facelift stands out for its ability to deliver natural, long-lasting results, making it an investment in both appearance and confidence.

I look about 15 years younger than my real age.

Fecelift

Jag Chana performed a face & neck lift with some fat transfer for me. I am absolutely delighted with the results. He had given me a face lift 16 years ago, so this was the second time I have had cosmetic surgery from him. I could not be happier and I look about 15 years younger than my real age.

Kerry’s before and after photos from her first surgery 16 years ago and latest results after her second facelift can be seen in the video below.

Best thing I ever did

Fecelift

The wonderful Mr Chana did my facelift 12 years ago. It was one of the best things I've ever done and I was over the moon with the results. Even now after all this time the results are there to see and I am thankful to him every day. I go to see him every 6 months or so for what he calls. 'maintenance' ie botox and sometimes fillers to keep me looking perky. Cannot recommend him highly enough for his care over all this time. He has a very calming manner and really listens to any concerns you might have.

Ten years later

Facelift

I am a male of 68 years old. I had a face-lift exactly 10 years ago which was rather brave of me. To be honest , it was the best decision l ever made. The face-lift was so successful that l continously get positive comments about my fresh youthful looks . Everyday when l looked into the mirror , l am still satisfied with my appearance. Up till today  nobody knew I had the facelift except my family.
