vaser lipo thighs

For many people, the thighs can be the most difficult place to shift excess fat on the entire body. The fat that collects here is often resistant to diet and exercise, and many people – particularly women – find that achieving slim thighs is near-impossible.

Traditionally, the most effective way to remove the fat has been liposuction. Liposuction is an acceptable procedure producing good results but the physical ‘trauma’ of the surgery can occasionally cause a fair amount of bruising and pain. Furthermore, the recovery periods are quite long and there are risks of irregularities and loose skin. These issues have been reduced by one of the latest liposuction innovations now available: Vaser liposelection.

Vaser liposelection uses controlled sound energy to liquefy the fat in the treatment area prior to its extraction. This allows the fat to be removed smoothly and gently, causing less trauma to the area. Patients can also expect reduced healing time and fewer side effects when compared with traditional liposuction. In particular, Vaser has also been shown to result in a more effective skin retraction and therefore risks of loose skin are reduced in the properly selected patients.

Vaser can either be performed under general anaesthetic, or local sedation anaesthetic, also known as ‘twilight’ anaesthetic. Which form of anaesthetic is appropriate for you will depend on the size and numbers of treatment areas. This will be explained in further detail, and your options will be discussed fully, during your consultation with Mr. Chana.

Because of the gentler nature of Vaser liposelection and the fact that it can be performed under local anaesthetic, some clinics incorrectly advertise Vaser as a non-surgical procedure. Undergoing Vaser with a practitioner that is not trained in cosmetic surgery can not only compromise your results but can cause other risks. To ensure your safety it is important to seek an accredited plastic surgeon who is trained and has experience in performing Vaser liposuction. Only then will you be fully informed of the procedure and the alternatives.

Why is it important to be fully informed of your options?
Mr Chana regularly sees patients who have inappropriately been treated with Vaser by ‘cosmetic doctors’ who are not plastic surgeons. The main kinds of problems he sees that require secondary correction are patients who have had Vaser but would have been better treated with skin excisional surgery. A typical example is a patient who attended a high street clinic and had Vaser to the inner thighs. There was quite a lot of loose skin in the first place but further fat removal simply made the situation worse. This could have been predicted if the doctor was a properly trained plastic surgeon. If a doctor does not know what the alternatives are and if he himself cannot offer them you may be pushed into having Vaser which may not be appropriate.  In this case, Mr Chana had to carry out corrective surgery with a thigh lift.

Mr. Chana was one of the first BAAPS accredited surgeons in the UK to invest in Vaser technology and integrate it into his practice. It is now his preferred method of fat removal because of its effective results and high levels of patient satisfaction but patient selection is important in order to get the best results.

What does the procedure involve?
Mr Chana will make a few very small openings in the skin approximately 4 to 5 mm long. Some fluid is injected to soften the fat and to help absorb the energy from the Vaser probe. The Vaser probe is then gently inserted to liquefy the fat cells. The fat is then gently and smoothly extracted via a suction technique. The small openings are closed with dissolvable stitches and small dressings applied. A compression garment is also applied and this will need to be worn for approximately 3 to 6 weeks.

What is the recovery following Vaser liposuction?
There may be some mild bruising but this should be minimal. Any discomfort is easily controlled with mild painkillers. You will probably need about a week off work but no exercise is advised for 6 weeks after surgery. The best results are seen by 3 to 6 months.

If you are interested in having Vaser liposuction on your thighs, you can learn more by booking a consultation with Mr. Jag Chana. During this consultation, Mr. Chana will be able to assess your individual case and let you know how extensive a procedure you are likely to need (based on your existing body shape and the results you are hoping to see). From this, he can let you know about the likely result you can expect to achieve as well as what kind of anaesthetic will be most suitable for you, and how long you should take off work. Remember, each treatment is personal and individual to you. Your consultation offers an excellent opportunity for you to ask Mr. Chana any questions you might have about the procedure so that you can move forward with your treatment feeling knowledgeable, comfortable and confident.
